Study of Generalized Parton Distributions with Clas at Jefferson Lab
In the past nearly five decades of electron scattering, experiments have focussed either on the measurements of form factors using exclusive processes or on measurements of inclusive processes to extract deep inelastic structure functions. Elastic processes measure the momentum transfer dependence of form factors, while the latter ones probe the quark’s longitudinal momentum and helicity distri...
متن کاملGeneralized Parton Distributions
■ Abstract This review explains why generalized parton distributions and the related quantum phase-space distributions are useful in exploring the quark and gluon structure of the proton and neutron. It starts with the physics of form factors and parton distributions. Then quantum phase-space distributions and their offspring are discussed. The properties of generalized parton distributions are...
متن کاملDemystifying generalized parton distributions
In this paper, I will explain in as simple and intuitive physical terms as possible what generalized parton distributions are, what new information about the structure of hadrons they convey and therefore what picture of the hadron will emerge. To develop this picture, I will use the example of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and exclusive meson electroproduction processes. Based on th...
متن کاملGeneralized Parton Distributions
We give an overview of the theory for generalized parton distributions. Topics covered are their general properties and physical interpretation, the possibility to explore the three-dimensional structure of hadrons at parton level, their potential to unravel the spin structure of the nucleon, their role in small-x physics, and efforts to model their dynamics. We review our understanding of the ...
متن کاملGeneralized parton distributions of nuclei
We review recent theoretical results on generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of nuclei, emphasizing the following three roles of nuclear GPDs: (i) complementarity to free proton GPDs, (ii) the enhancement of traditional nuclear effects such as nuclear binding, EMC effect, nuclear shadowing, and (iii) an access to novel nuclear effects such as medium modifications of bound nucleons.
